ShareTotal Estimated Cost of Child Abuse & Neglect in the United States

The researchers sought to represent the overall economic impact of child abuse and neglect. The study data only included costs for children already classified as being abused or neglected according to the Harm Standard in the Third National Incidence Study of Child Abuse and Neglect. The researchers did not include costs associated with interventions or treatment services for the abusers or other members of the children's families.

The aggregate cost of child abuse and neglect in the United States was estimated at nearly $104 billion in 2007. Overall direct costs of child abuse in 2007 were estimated at $33 billion. The indirect costs, estimated at $70 billion, accrued from costs from adverse outcomes associated with abuse and neglect, such as lost future productivity or involvement with juvenile or adult criminal justice systems.
