New York Assembly Bill
6001
New York Assembly Bill 6001 was
introduced on February 23, 2009 by State Senator Charles Fuschillo. The
bill would require private health insurance companies to cover the
diagnosis and treatment of ASD for individuals up to the age of 21. The
annual maximum benefit is $36,000. Coverage must be provided for
treatments prescribed, provided, or ordered by a licensed physician or
licensed psychologist who deems the care medically necessary. Covered
treatments include: habilitative or rehabilitative care, pharmacy care,
psychiatric care, psychological care, therapeutic care, and Applied
Behavioral Analysis, and any care that is determined by the state health
department to be medically necessary, based upon its review of best
practices and evidence-based research. The bill only applies to
fully-funded health plans governed by state law.
