A letter was sent by the federal Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) to state Medicaid directors about the need for vigilance on January 16, 2009. The letter presents federal policy and state obligations to prevent payments to excluded individuals and entities. It also provides examples of items or services types that are not reimbursable if provided by an individual or entity on the OIG excluded provider list and how states can help providers screen employees and contractors.
