Mental Health Challenges & Recommendations Richmond Criminal Justice
System
The City of Richmond, Virginia is considering a Jail Services Project (JSP)
to provide mental health and support services to people with mental
illness who are involved with the city's criminal justice system. The
projected annual cost of the JSP is about $2.7 million. It would be
funded by state and local funding opportunities. The JSP will provide
comprehensive services from pretrial to reentry; services will include
specialized psychiatric care to about 400 to 600 inmates annually. The
JSP will also link inmates who have mental illnesses with appropriate
community services upon release. The jail services team will have access
to an expanded formulary of psychotropic medications for inmates with
mental illness.
This report also includes an analysis of the current treatment options
for people with mental illness who are involved with the criminal justice
system in Richmond. It provides analysis of the challenges facing the
current system.
