Share Iowa Senate File 2349; to Require Insurance Plan Coverage for Autism Spectrum Disorders

The bill was included in the Iowa's appropriations bill (HF 2531) as an amendment. The benefit provides up to $36,000 in coverage for autism therapies for children up to age 21 who have been diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder. The services are only available for people covered by the state employees' health plan. As described in the original legislation, Iowa Senate File 2349; to Require Insurance Plan Coverage for Autism Spectrum Disorders, the coverage includes applied behavior analysis and other medically necessary treatments prescribed, provided, or ordered by a licensed physician, a licensed psychologist, a licensed social worker, or a licensed registered nurse practitioner. The legislation also describes certification processes for behavior specialists. The coverage will be available as of January 1, 2011.
