ShareBegin at Home A Housing First Pilot Project for Chronically Homeless Single Adults: One Year Outcomes

The report presents one-year outcomes for "Begin at Home" (BAH), an assistance program in Seattle, Washington, that places homeless individuals in permanent homes with vital medical, mental health, and other support services instead of requiring them to first stop drinking or taking drugs to earn their shelter. The collected data included client, participant, and stakeholder feedback, evaluations, and outcomes, including average use of acute care services and number of incarcerations. A total of 20 BAH participants were studied from August 2006 to August 2007.

Participatory homeless alcoholics emergency room visits were 191 per year before the BAH program and 50 per year after the BAH program. BAH participants admissions to the local medical center were reduced from 57 in total during the year prior to admission to only 13 after. This reduction represents a savings of nearly $1.2 million in hospital and other related charges.
