The
Center for Effective Philanthropy:
(a) Indicators of Effectiveness:
Understanding and Improving Foundation Performance
Foundation leaders are increasingly
concerned with understanding and assessing the overall performance
of their foundations, convinced that better performance assessment
will lead to greater effectiveness and, in turn, to more social
impact on the people and issues they affect.
(b) Toward a Common Language:
Listening to Foundation CEOs and Other Experts Talk About
Performance Measurement in Philanthropy
Charitable foundations justly take pride in
the good works they enable. But what does it mean for a foundation
to perform well? And how can its performance be measured? These
are the difficult questions we posed during the autumn of 2001 to
74 foundation executives, CEOs, and expert observers of
philanthropy.

Lessons Learned From a Gathering of
Foundation Leaders
Nearly one hundred leaders from foundations
across the country came together in Boston on November 14 - 15 to
participate in The Center for Effective Philanthropy's seminar,
Assessing Foundation Performance: Current Practices, Future
Possibilities. This publication offers a summary of lessons
learned and questions raised during this gathering, which was
supported in part by a grant from The Boston Foundation.
