ShareUninsured & Dying Because of It: Updating the Institute of Medicine Analysis on the Impact of Uninsurance on Mortality

This research presents an update on 2002 research conducted by the Institute of Medicine on the relationship between an individual's insurance status and risk of death. The researchers proposed that deaths from preventable or treatable conditions could be positively correlated with access to early and adequate treatment, such as is generally provided through a health insurance plan.

The researchers applied the 2002 research methodology but used recent Census Bureau estimates of the annual number of uninsured adults and applied a differential mortality estimate. They discovered that the 2002 projections of 18,314 annual deaths related to lack of insurance may have underestimated the number of such deaths.
