Benito R. vs. Eastern Los Angeles Regional Center Complaint Filing
The lawsuit was filed on behalf of children with autism who formerly received Developmental, Individual Difference (DIR) from the Eastern Los Angeles
Regional Center in California (ELARC). The center discontinued DIR after the legislature made changes to the Lanterman Act which
governs disability services. The changes prohibit the regional centers from
funding experimental treatment and social activities. The plaintiffs claim that
DIR is neither experimental, or a purely social or recreational activity. They
seek a preliminary injunction to ensure service continuation.
