ShareTexas Health Care Claims Study Special Report on Foster Children

The Texas Comptroller reviewed Medicaid claims submitted for foster children in 2004 as part of a fraud audit. The comptroller referred areas of potential fraud and abuse to the Texas Office of Inspector General for further review. Based on the initial review, the comptroller made 48 recommendations to improve the interactions and cooperation between the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services (DFPS) and physicians treating foster children. The key recommendation is that the DPFS should hire a full-time medical director to oversee the provision of health care for children in foster care.
