Nursing Home Use by "Oldest Old" Sharply Declines
This analysis of the results of the National Nursing Home Survey
indicates that the percentage of adults over the age of 65 who
live in nursing homes has declined from 4.2% in 1985 to 3.6% in
2004. The percentage of adults over the age of 85, the "oldest old"
living in nursing homes has sharply declined over the same time
period, from 21.1% in 1985 to 13.9% in 2004.
This decline has
resulted in a slower than predicted nursing home utilizations.
However, due to population growth (the number of people over the age
of 85 has increased by 50% between 1985 and 2004) the number of
"oldest old" residing in nursing homes has remained the same. The
researchers suspect that there are several reasons for declining
nursing home use that will continue to affect future demand for
nursing home facilities.
