Guidelines for the Clinical Use of Electronic Mail with
Patients The purpose of this document is to guide clinicians and health care delivery organizations
in the use of electronic mail (e-mail) communication with patients so that this method of communication might enhance the
value of, rather than introduce complications into, the provider-patient relationship.
Health care organizations differ in the methods they adopt to communicate with patients. The task force acknowledges that it
is not realistic to prescribe a detailed set of practices for universal implementation. The guidelines that we present are
based upon our accumulated experience and the current literature. All recommendations should be adapted to individual
circumstances. Ongoing evaluation of the guidelines is needed within a variety of institutions and relationships.
