Prevention efforts: A primary mechanism for preventing child
maltreatment is through early preventive services aimed at families
who may have a higher risk of mistreating their children.
Healthy Families Indiana is a major initiative that works with
families that may be at risk for maltreating their children. By
working closely with hospital maternity wards, prenatal clinics, and
other local agencies, Healthy Families systematically identifies
families that could benefit from support services either before or
immediately after the birth of a child.
