ShareMaking Sense of Student Drug Testing

For the safety and well being of young people, it is crucial to develop programs that effectively address drug use. To succeed, these programs must be grounded in research, compassion, and health. They must also promote trust and honest dialogue between adults and young people. The authors of this booklet, the Drug Policy Alliance and the American Civil Liberties Union, have analyzed, researched, and litigated student drug testing for many years. We have listened to the experts from the American Academy of Pediatrics and the American Public Health Association to hundreds of concerned educators, parents, and students across the country. The experts agree, and the evidence is clear: random drug testing does not effectively reduce drug use among young people.
