Michael A. Acosta, M.S.W., L.M.S.W., Senior Consultant,
brings over 30 years of experience within the health and
human service field. Prior to joining OPEN MINDS, Mr.
Acosta was self-employed, providing professional social work
services, with a focus on early childhood, fatherhood
issues, grant writing, community collaboration, program
planning, and evaluation. Prior to providing these contract
services, Mr. Acosta spent his career in early childhood
education. For over 15 years, he was with the
Wexford-Missaukee Intermediate School District, in Cadillac,
Michigan, working throughout his career on a variety of
grant development initiatives. He was also a co-coordinator
of Early On, where he was responsible for community planning
for infants and toddlers with special needs and served as
the Cradle to Classroom project coordinator, where he
provided training, support, and supervision to home visiting
staff for a grant-funded birth to kindergarten program.
Mr. Acosta has a wealth of experience in grant writing.
He previously taught a grant writing course at Grand Valley
State University and presented on grant writing at the 2002
National Association of Social Workers State Conference.
Mr. Acosta obtained his bachelor’s degree in Psychology
from Michigan State University and his Master of Social Work
from Western Michigan State University. He is an approved
school social worker with the Michigan Department of
Education, and is also a licensed master social worker with
the State of Michigan. He is a current member of the
Michigan Association for Evaluation and the
Wexford-Missaukee Early On Interagency Coordinating Council.
