Daniel Y. Patterson, M.D., M.P.H., Senior Associate,
has had a 35-year distinguished career in managed care and
managed behavioral health care. At age 31, he became the
first director of the government’s HMO service having helped
write HMO legislation and participated in an HMO task force
headed by Dr. Paul Ellwood. Dr. Patterson created managed
behavioral health care programs both at a 100,000 member
staff model HMO (Group Health Association of Washington, DC)
and at a group model HMO serving 150,000 members (Kaiser
Permanente of the Mid-Atlantic region). In these HMO
organizations, he served as the president of the physician
medical group, and served as a member of the medical board
of directors and as associate medical director. He was the
founding medical director of a legacy company, which became
ValueOptions, and served an array of corporate clients,
including IBM, Chevron, Shell Oil Company, Harris
Corporation, and Wells Fargo.
In 1995, he moved from managed care to the service
delivery system, serving as the medical director of a
50-physician multispecialty medical group in Wilmington,
North Carolina. He has been a consultant to NCQA and to
numerous HMOs; has been on the clinical faculty of Johns
Hopkins, Georgetown, George Washington and the University of
North Carolina medical schools; and has authored three
chapters in books on managed behavioral care. In addition,
Dr. Patterson is a noted expert witness in litigation
involving managed care systems. Dr. Patterson is board
certified and a Distinguished Life Fellow of the American
Psychiatric Association.
Dr. Patterson received his residency training at Johns
Hopkins Hospital and received a Master’s in Public Health
degree, majoring in health care organization and financing
(also at Johns Hopkins). |
