Deirdre E. Brown, M.Ed.,
Senior Consultant, OPEN MINDS, has over 15 years of experience
in the Juvenile Justice/Services field. After working in different
juvenile programs in both the private sector and at the state level, she
brings to OPEN MINDS a multitude of philosophies and tactics
necessary to work with diverse populations.
Ms. Brown began her career
in Connecticut working within the New Haven Juvenile Detention facility.
Shortly after completing her Bachelor of Science degree and relocating,
she joined Community Alternatives of the Black Hills in South Dakota
teaching social and life skills to offenders. Upon returning to the east
coast, Ms. Brown spent several years as Senior Treatment Director for a
wilderness based program in PA dedicated to serving delinquent youth. She
than became the first Franklin County preventative aftercare worker for a
wrap around based program developed to redirect previously placed youth
and at risk (for placement) youth to prevent any further placement needs.
After many years of work within the private sector, Ms. Brown moved to MD
where she began a state appointed position as Resource Specialist
Supervisor for DJS, Region IV. In this role, Ms. Brown, covering the nine
counties of the Eastern Shore, provides leadership, management and
direction to Case Managers in order to assist them in placing youth in the
least restrictive environments.
Throughout the past 17
years in the juvenile justice field, Ms. Brown has had the opportunity to
experience different facets of the juvenile services and social services
arena. She was able to serve as a resource instructor/program liaison with
the Maryland State Police Corps, scheduled to teach a non credit course
(developed by Ms. Brown) at Wilson College in Chambersburg, PA., worked as
a vocational counselor for ARC, and she obtained provisional MCTC
(Maryland Correctional Training Commission) instructor certification. In
addition to joining the Open Minds Consulting team in Oct, 2008, Ms. Brown
continues to sit on the advisory board for Easy Child, a computer based
system designed to assist families to teach values, respect and
responsibility to young children and teenagers.
Ms. Brown received her
Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice/ Sociology from Southern
Connecticut State University in 1991, and obtained her Masters in
Education in 2004 from Capella University.
